Burraco for 2 or 4 players: what changes
Burraco is played by two, one against one, or by four, two pairs against each other. The rules are the same, but the game changes quite a lot. Here are the differences and some advice on choosing.
The differences at a glance
| For 2 (head to head) | For 4 (in pairs) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cards each | 11 | 11 |
| Pozzetti | one per player | one per pair |
| Melds | each player their own | shared with your partner |
| Cards in the deck at the start of the round | 63 | 41 |
| Cards in hand that count at the end of the round | yours | yours and your partner's |
Burraco for 2
Head to head everything depends on you: every choice has an immediate effect and you can see who plays better. The deck is longer, so there's more time to build clean burracos before it runs out. It's perfect for learning, practising or a quick challenge.
Burraco for 4
In pairs you play as a team: melds belong to the pair, and you and your partner can add cards to the same melds. The deck is shorter, so you need to be quicker to take the pozzetto. Understanding each other matters a lot: working out what your partner is after from the melds they lay down, and discarding with the opponent who plays after you in mind.
Which to choose
- Just starting out? Begin with 2, perhaps with the guided game.
- Want an evening with friends? With 4 it's more fun and there's more chatting.
- Short on time? Choose a game to 505 points, the quickest.
On FantaCarte you can play both ways, to 505, 1005 or 2005 points, with friends at a private table or with other players in the rooms. And if someone in a pair steps away, the CPU plays in their place and the game doesn't get stuck.
